“And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”
2 Corinthians 5:15
Caleb: “How come I have to be a drawer or cooker or race-car driver or a police man?” (those are on his current list of future aspirations)
Me (still not quite sure what he’s getting at): “Well you don’t have to be one of those things, you can do anything you choose. “
Me (thinking I understand where he’s going with this now): “I guess cause they just want to know what you like.”
Caleb: “But why?”
Me (realizing this could go on for a while): “I don’t know bud.”
Every child loves dreaming about when they grow up. For me, I loved pretend to wash dishes with my older brother and using my younger brother to play dress up and play house. I loved dreaming that one day I would be a famous singer. As I grew up, I still searched for what I was good at. I knew I liked drawing, math, and language. I liked writing. As I grew in my love for the Lord, my heart broke for people that did not know him. I could never find the right words to explain what I wanted to do. I couldn’t explain “service.”
As I look back, it is so clear. Little by little God kept pointing me down the same path, and giving me the same desires. As my relationship with the Lord grew, the desires of my heart became stronger.
Consider these thoughts from Elizabeth Elliott:
…If a young person has been taught from childhood that he ought to ‘be something’ without at the same time being shown that nothing is better than being God’s servant, he may be preoccupied with ambitions and ideals he has gotten solely from the world.”
Well, now I feel prepared to answer that question differently. We want to teach our children to obey God’s will in their lives. We want to help them to see the gifts and talents the Lord has given them to serve him! Now I will look for an opportunity to pray with my children, that they will seek the will of the Lord in their life. The prayer of the Psalmist:
" Show me your ways, O LORD,
teach me your paths;
guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long"Psalm 25:4-5
Here's a picture of my little buddy helping me clean the windows! He shows such a servants heart!

What a sweet little boy and what a great perspective you have on that question! I've never really thought about the 'why's' of that question, but leave it up to a child to ask the hard questions!
As for your comment on SITS - the reason so many have all ready responded is because the FB is posted around 9-10pm PST the night before.
Blessings to you,
Great lesson!
"Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever."
Brooke, what wonderful insight- thank you for sharing, especially since we'll be crossing that bridge in a few years as well.
It's neat to see Caleb going through this stage and being a thinker. I'm glad you guys are there to make the most of teachable moments- shaping the perspective he will be thinking from in the future.
You must be so proud of your children's beautiful hearts!
From a proud Uncle- who used to play dressup and house...

So true! I tell my children that they need to pray to God for Him to show them what He wants them to do. They may love soccer, and maybe God has a career for them there (which is a huge stretch), BUT I tell them He may also have just given them something extra to enjoy and use in other ways. You are so right that we need to help direct them to look for what God wants them to do. Kudos to you, Mom!
not sure where to post this since it relates to your comment on the SITS blog about being new at this and not saying "dropped by SITS..." or whatever. Actually, I thought that was a MEAN comment to make by that lady blogger...if that's all that folks want to say...why criticized them for saying it? Folks took the effort to drop by and take a look. If they don't feel impressed to say anything more than that you should be happy they looked and wanted to leave a footprint behind. Anyway, my advice to you---don't apologize for just doing what you wanna do. I say that all the time b/c I want folks to know their link to the secret is in the sauce is how i found them. anyway, your comment really touched me--it's seemed so contrite and almost an apology. No need kiddo--this blogging is for YOU---so you do just what comes naturally. that's HER problem. have a great day. and...I DROPPED BY FROM SITS!!! So there...!!!!!
Great thought! So we should train our kids to say whenever some one asks them what they want to be, "God's servant." What a relief to know that God will guide our steps instead of feeling pressure to choose the right career. My purpose in homeschooling has been to educate them so that could do anything they feel called to do.
